If you’ve been visiting this site over the years, you might be familiar with our format for coverage the day after an award show: we always end on our respective best dressed selections. So last night on Zoom, after the Golden Globes had wrapped and Sarah, Duana, and I were mapping out today’s posts, where ordinarily we might be fighting over our best dressed picks and who gets to write which look, when it came down to it, none of us had a slam dunk. There was no one outfit for any of us where we were like, I have to write about this, I love it so much.

That’s not to say that there weren’t good looks – and we are highlighting some of them in this post – but to me the Globes carpet kinda felt… like a warmup. There are a lot of events and parties and etc etc coming up over the next few weeks. The Critics Choice Awards are next weekend and they’re now arguably more significant than the Globes. It’ll be interesting to see whether or not the fashion parade is more elevated in six days. For the Globes, though, here are some of our standouts. Starting with Ali Wong in Balenciaga:

If this dress looks familiar, it’s because you’ve seen it before, on both Ariana Grande…

And Nicole Kidman.

I’m sure we all understand the high degree of difficulty of going AFTER Nicole Kidman. And Ali pulls it off. She may have pulled it off best with the vision of stylist Tara Swennen with the black gloves and the black knife boots combination. And of all the shades we’ve now seen of this dress, red I think is the winner.

Ali was at the Globes with her best friend and some people in our live chat at The Squawk were wondering about Bill Hader. During the last award cycle, Bill was also a nominee for Barry so it made sense for them to show up together. These two are pretty consistent in how they do NOT perform their relationship for the public so I’m not sure the fact that he wasn’t there with her is a sign of anything.

Staying with the gloves moment, Cristin Milioti looked great in dramatic Maleficent black velvet, so well suited to her character in The Penguin, all the way up to her hair choice – pulled back and sleek to show off her pronounced widow’s peak, which works beautifully with the energy of this look.

As for Salma Hayek, it wasn’t what she wore that was the conversation, it was that she didn’t touch up her grey before the event. Grey hair and, in this photo below, posing like a teenager. Because youth is a spirit, not a physical attribute.

Speaking of youthful energy, always Ayo Edebiri.

Ayo’s in custom Loewe, what some are calling a tribute to Julia Roberts at the Golden Globes – and, as usual, This. Is. So. Good. The pants. Look at the waist on those pants!

But again, to go back to my point about the choices that people were making for the Globes, did you see what Ayo wore on Saturday night at the W Magazine event? Arguably, with the sequins, a more “award show” look, and still she decided on the more casual option for the Globes.

On the other side of casual is couture, and one of the couture winners, for me, at the Globes was Naomi Watts. This is signature Schiaparelli, you can see it in the hem. Which, sure, is weird looking for some, but Daniel Roseberry’s whole sh-t is about construction and fabric imagination. Naomi’s dress was custom, inspired by the FW24 collection, and I wish I had video of her walking onto the carpet because you really had to see how it moved, but this shot from the runway gives you some idea of how exquisitely it all comes together. In particular, the way the black material took the light was true art.

And finally Keri Russell who was not there with Matthew Rhys. And he didn’t join her at the Emmys either. She said during one of her red carpet interviews though that they’d just come home from their holiday and he flew back with the kids but that she’d been texting him through the night so we’re all good here. But it’s a reminder too that, where gossip is concerned, there’s an expectation around public appearances, perhaps too much expectation. This is how In Touch Magazine and the Daily Mail makes up their stories.

Let’s instead enjoy Keri’s look – Stephane Rolland and totally badass. Especially the ballooning at the back. My only note is that I’m not feeling the black pumps with it. But this is both The Diplomat and Star Wars, and totally perfect as a representation of her recent work.
