The weird vibe hanging around the MET Gala this year is that everyone has to pretend they aren’t embarrassed to be hanging out with Lauren and Jeff Bezos. Anna Wintour is many things but she is not corny and she is not tacky, but this year’s benefactors sure are both.
CNN’s Rache Tashjian wrote about the MET’s billionaire program and the NYT published a story about the Costume Institute’s plan to survive without the MET Gala, preparing for a future where Anna Wintour no longer scales up the event. Before the celebrities took over, the Gala was a socialite event. The socialites were pushed out by celebrities and then the celebrities were competing with influencers and now it’s come full circle, back to the wealthiest people buying a seat the cool kids’ table. Which of course makes it the most uncool thing in the world.

This morning Lainey wrote about Beyoncé’s presence hovering over the MET Gala and her stylist posted this and there’s no way he did it without permission from the team. The anticipation is building.
Chad Michael Murray has a candle line and I read about it right after reading a story about Meghan Sussex and I thought, “Chad Michael Murray and Meghan Sussex are in the same business.” And I’m not wrong.
After headlining Coachella, Justin Bieber is breaking streaming records at Spotify. There’s been a lot of criticism around JB’s business, tracing back to his cancelled Justice tour in 2022, which triggered a payback, for which he had to take a loan from Scooter Braun. Justin has climbed out of that by severing ties with Scooter (considering Justin had been intertwined with him since he was a child and how much power Scooter’s management companies wield, that is huge), selling his catalogue and retaining the rights to new music. He has a lot of creative freedom but it has not happened overnight, it’s been years of planning and setbacks. He navigated his career without family support (until he married Hailey) or strong industry protections, it’s quite impressive.
Katy Perry is a regular at the MET Gala, is she bringing Justin Trudeau this year as her plus one? Is he going to wear silly socks? TBD.
Pretty low-key Instagram announcement for Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden’s third baby, Nautus. I’m sure that confirming it on Met Monday was a choice, lots of other stuff going on.
