Madonna’s been back at the forefront of pop culture since Coachella, when she confirmed that a new album is indeed on the way – and not just any album but the sequel to Confessions on a Dancefloor, 20 years later.

But it’s more than just the upcoming album, it’s also one of her most famous songs, “Vogue”. Because “Vogue” has been associated for months with another sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2. In the trailers, all over the promotional tour and the movie’s social media account – Madonna and her label allowed the studio to use the track, over and over and over again, basically, to set the tone for the film which… like her first Confessions album… was a smash hit exactly two decades ago. So there’s a lot of synergy happening here, and smart marketing, in establishing a relationship with the first summer blockbuster of the year (topping the box office worldwide this weekend) and of course the magazine, Vogue, and its connection to Anna Wintour.

Ahead of North American screenings this weekend, a scene featuring Madonna and Anna played before The Devil Wears Prada 2, which shows you how layered the deal was between 20th Century/Disney and Warner Music, her label. Up until this morning, only bootleg versions of the scene were being shared on socials; Madonna has now posted it herself.

There are several takeaways here. First… again… the more recent music in Madonna’s catalogue might not be all that exciting (we don’t talk about Madame X, shudder), but she does still know how to market the sh-t out of herself. So far, the marketing for Confessions 2 has been excellent and expensive.

Next, this is what Anna Wintour has time for now, LOL, since she’s no longer the day-to-day editor of American Vogue (but everybody knows she’s the real boss). And the fact that Madonna decided to share this on the first Monday in May, and we all know what this day means on the fashion calendar. Since she has a new song out with Sabrina Carpenter, “Bring Your Love”, maybe if she goes, they’ll walk together.
