We were already updated earlier this week at the Tony Awards that Jake Gyllenhaal and Jeanne Cadieu are still together after almost three years. Both were in attendance, though they walked the carpet separately.

On Wednesday though, at the premiere of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter, it was a double date, as Maggie and Peter Sarsgaard were joined by Jake and Jeanne who made their official public debut as a couple. Did it surprise you?

Jake is pretty guarded about his personal life, and he hasn’t stepped out with a girlfriend on a carpet like this in a long, long time. Not since… Reese Witherspoon, I think? That was 12 years ago. And while he’s had several relationships in between Reese and Jeanne, and has been photographed by the paparazzi with most of those partners, this appearance with Jeanne, and on a family night no less, well, there’s only one takeaway, right? Not that there was any doubt, but this is serious.

Because there’s also the matter of the upstage. The night would have been a big moment for Maggie as The Lost Daughter is her directorial debut and it’s screening at the New York Film Festival, where she lives, and she won in Venice for Best Screenplay, so she may not have wanted her little brother’s love life to be overshadowing her achievement.

At the same time, it’s also a beautiful occasion to celebrate with the people closest to you. Jake would obviously have had Maggie’s blessing before he and Jeanne confirmed that they’d show up together. And also, both Gyllenhaals are veterans in the business. Any added attention to that premiere, and the film, is a promotional bonus.

And you know what I love? Sister and brother were in matching velvet. It’s so well coordinated that it could be the same collection even though they’re not. Maggie’s dress is Fendi and on Jake, a deep green Bottega Veneta, yet another fashion flex following his pink suit at the Tonys a few days ago. Really enjoying this Jake style era.
