Corn and Cheese: The First Red Carpet
Katy Perry brought Justin Trudeau to Dua Lipa and Callum Turner’s wedding this past weekend. Then they made their way to New York where she premiered her latest concert documentary at Tribeca Festival, where they made their red carpet debut.
Some of us have been waiting months for this to happen. Not because we needed them to take one more official step forward but because of the promise of what these two on a red carpet would be. Because of who they are, individually, and how they match each other spiritually. I call it corn and cheese – a specific and similar energy that was signature to their celebrity well before they even met. Which is why when they did start dating, it made so much sense. There is no pop star more literal and obvious than Katy Perry; there is no international diplomat more performatively earnest than Justin Trudeau, at least not at his profile level.
Together they are next level cringe, but the best kind of cringe. It’s cringe that also makes you laugh. Emily, our site manager, texted this to me last night with LOLLLLLLLLLLL as the only comment. And she’s right. LOL FOREVER.
You know what I love about these two? It’s that they live up to the script. If we were to have predicted how Katy and JT would have behaved on their first red carpet together, this is exactly how we would have imagined it. Of course he would murmur some kind of inside joke or remark just for her, prompting her to share what would be some kind of secret look between them, prompting her to smile wide and giggle. Of course she’d put her hands all over him, brushing away imaginary lint but really just letting us know that she’ll be doing the same thing in just a few hours only he won’t be wearing any clothes. Of course there’s all kinds of forehead-to-forehead and nose-to-nose touches. They would have happily stayed in front of those cameras for five hours if you asked them to.
And it’s a gift to us, really. It’s a gift to gossip that these two thirsty celebrities aren’t pretending that they’re not thirsty and actually want to present themselves to us to be gossiped about. It’s a gift to gossip that they speak the same love language – or, rather, they speak all the love languages. Loudly. Proudly. Publicly.
We're Squawking Corn and Cheese today because why not. (App link here.)
