The official trailer for Superman is here and yeah, okay, I’m in. You know what won me over? Not Superman and not Krypto the super-dog, it’s Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

It’s Lois grilling Clark Kent as Superman, a little flirty energy to start, but once she gets serious, she doesn’t let up. She’s questioning him, challenging him, making him reconsider his actions. It’s good journalism! It’s also just the right dynamic for Lois, who loves and supports Clark, yes, but who is not an idiot. She can think ahead, parse consequences, she can—and should—think about the implications for humanity. That’s what she is to him, after all, his human side, the partner who keeps him figuratively, if not literally grounded.

It has come up in conversations since Krypto broke out as the star of Superman, that the last time James Gunn wrote cute animals into a movie, they all died horrible deaths (Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3). I can’t imagine Lainey’s heartbreak if anything happens to Krypto. But since Gunn based Krypto on his own dog, I think the super-dog is safe. I don’t think James Gunn is going to liquify the avatar of his own dog. At least, I hope not.

What else happened today…

Jenna Ortega is promoting her new movie with The Weeknd, Hurry Up Tomorrow. She wore a John Galliano newsprint dress, the one made famous by Carrie Bradshaw, to the premiere. The one actually worn on Sex in the City is currently on 1st Dibs for $245K, so this is either another vintage one without the TV provenance, or it’s a recreation. Looks good on her either way. (Go Fug Yourself)

Ryan Murphy is producing a series about John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Carolyn Bessette called American Love Story. I am dreading this one because of the tragic deaths involved, and I don’t think Murphy will be graceful about it at all. A Tony-nominated actress, Sarah Pidgeon, has been cast as Carolyn, and model Paul Kelly will play JFK Jr. Good luck to them, whatever happens with this show won’t be their fault. It’s always the writing with Murphy. (Celebitchy)

Cynthia Erivo is going to star in a one-woman adaptation of Dracula on London’s West End next year. The play comes from the same producers behind Sarah Snook’s one-woman adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray. Snook has gotten generally good reviews for her solo act, and I bet Erivo will, too. I kind of like seeing different actors work together, but I’m not the target audience, I guess. (OMG Blog)

Everyone refused to call “Max” by its name, sticking to the original “HBO”, which was a given because HBO has decades of positive brand association and “Max” means nothing except David Zaslav trying to exert his will over Warner Bros. (I would get yelled at by publicists for not calling it “Max” in articles, so I would write it out as asked, but I never called it that in my offline life. I describe The Pitt to everyone as “an HBO show” because it IS.)

Now, Warners is reversing course and rebranding Max as HBO Max, which was the streaming platform’s first name change under the Zaslav regime. Basically, they’re putting “HBO” back because no one called it “Max”. The new branding didn’t take. What’s that? David Zaslav had a bad idea no one liked? No, you don’t say. (Pajiba)
