The latest episode of Brett Goldstein’s podcast, Films To Be Buried With, features Jennifer Lopez – ongoing promotion for their film, Office Romance, now streaming on Netflix. The premise of the pod is in the title: it’s people talking about movies, not necessarily their favourites but specifically the ones they remember at certain points in their lives.

What’s making the most headlines is what JLo says about when she saw I’m Still Here, nominated for three Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Fernanda Torres, and eventually winning for Best International Feature Film. It’s a devastating story and JLo shares that she watched it at a low point in her life – she was sick and she was going through a divorce… from Ben Affleck, obviously. And the film wrecked her, but in a cathartic kind of way, and also bonded her with her dad because they saw it together.

The conversation is an hour long, though, and there’s more to it than just that moment. It’s a wide-ranging conversation using film to discuss … so many other things – which is the point and purpose of art. And the reason why, I think, it’s remarkable, is because we rarely hear JLo talking like this. She is interviewed all the time, and of course we’ve seen so much of that. But this is a real discussion with a friend, a colleague, a peer. Someone who seems to care very deeply about her opinion about culture, someone who is curious about her taste. So she gets to freeball about movies that she’s not in, about other actors and their performances, about the kinds of stories she’s drawn to. And she’s enjoying it, you can tell that she’s enjoying it. The way I’m reading into it, she’s enjoying being seen…

And that’s probably why there are people, me included, who are on this ship, even though it’s not sailing. Brett Goldstein is obviously attracted to JLo, physically, because I think he’s also attracted to her as a person, he’s interested in what she has to say about, well, anything really. But for her, as an artist, the fact that he cares about her point of view as a storyteller – it must mean something to her, especially since she actually says at the beginning of the pod that the industry has shortchanged her abilities. But not Brett. I appreciate him for appreciating her, even though this rom-com didn’t go from screen to real life. WHYYYYYYYY NOTTTTTTTTTTTT.

JLo was in Paris today and the rumour is she’ll be making a surprise (not anymore) appearance at one or all of David Guetta’s concerts over the next few days.

What else happened today…

Joan Cusack’s normal life away from Hollywood. (Pajiba)

Here’s something about Rihanna that I’ve never really noticed until the Fug Girls just pointed it out: her toenails and how they’re always the same polish colour. I also have a go-to toenail polish colour, it never changes. Not her colour but it’s one and done, no variation. I’ve been doing the same with my fingernails for the last six months. For some reason I find it reassuring. (Go Fug Yourself)

My week has been dominated by the World Cup. I’m writing this after doing a shoot at the Fan Festival here in Toronto. Tomorrow I’ll be shooting at the stadium before Canada’s first game. It’s a beautiful game, yes, and the game is the main event, but there are also side shows at the World Cup. The WAGs are one of them. (The Cut)

June is extra bonkers this year because of sports but June is always beautiful because it’s Pride Month. This is a list of 2SLGBTQ+ films worth watching and celebrating. (Refinery 29)

They’re doing a whole spectacle for the king on Saturday in England but the kings I recognise – RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook – and the anniversary I recognise – FESTA – is happening in Busan. BTS has been on a short break for the last few weeks but they will be BIG and BACK tomorrow, from home! (Korea Herald)
