That title will make more sense to you when you watch Kerry Washington’s acceptance speech at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment event yesterday where she received the Equity in Entertainment Award. Every point she made was educational and inclusive, starting with an analogy about a fence, an apple orchard, and three children on the other side.
Through her production company, Kerry has been telling stories that center marginalised voices, helping people tell their truths and step into the lead roles of their lives. In order to that, she says, we also have to, all of us, take on supporting roles – that should be the function of power: the goal of attaining it is to share it. And this is how Kerry has been operating, she finally was able to step into her own main character era knowing that in doing so she could become a better supporting character. Justin Timberlake could never.
I really, really love this speech. I think I might revisit it at least once every few weeks, she does such a great job differentiating between equality and equity and also articulating how art can have a place in these conversations.
Also, she looks amazing. This dress. And I usually hate light blue. But this isn’t just a regular light blue. It’s several shades of blue, and thin black lines to accentuate the flowers, and the shape of it is just so pretty on her, perfect for a breakfast gathering. It’s light and airy, I can’t stop staring at it, zooming in on the construction, how exquisitely crafted it is.
Credit then to her stylist, Rob Zangardi. Remember, Kerry used to work with Law Roach until he quit styling. Those are big shoes for Rob (who also works with Jennifer Lopez) to fill and he is killing it with Kerry.
