I posted about the shakeup yesterday at Chanel in my post about Jennie who’s been a Chanel ambassador for years now. Virginie Viard is out and the fashion industry’s biggest mystery right now is who will be brought in to replace her: Hedi Slimane, John Galliano, Sarah Burton… or someone more under the radar?
Chanel is in need of new energy, and whoever is named as their new creative director will have to work within the legacy of the brand, because Chanel is one of the most recognisable and prestigious fashion brands in history, and also invigorate the house’s energy.
There was a Chanel party last night at the Tribeca Festival with a number of celebrities in attendance, most of whom were wearing Chanel. First of all, it’s a very Chanel carpet in terms of its design – simple and understated, that green garden backdrop and the black carpet. But where it falls flat is that it’s so f-cking hard to see the outfits. The lighting is a problem here! Nothing is popping! Take Natasha Lyonne’s look, which is so cute, this pantsuit with the feather puffs on the hips, but you can barely make out the finer details and she looks so much better away from the step-and-repeat.
But I’m starting with Natasha because she is a frequent guest at Chanel dinners and she wears Chanel often and always, always does the clothes justice – in fact you might say she gives them more justice than they deserve. And this is not often the case where Chanel is concerned. Kristen Stewart in Chanel, yes. Same goes for Michelle Williams. Margot Robbie, however, in Chanel, well, the internet and her fans would shout out a very loud f-ck no.
Natasha in Chanel, however, is a consistent performer. She’s an excellent ambassador for the house. So my question is…why isn’t she an official ambassador for the house?! Now that Chanel is heading in a new direction, Natasha Lyonne would be a great choice to front the new campaign. Put a ring on it!
Anyway, you know what I just said about that carpet being so dark you can’t see any of the clothes? It’s a fashion crime to do this to Colman Domingo. I would like a better lit shot of his silhouette, and these pants!
Same goes for Katie Holmes who wore all black lace and I’ll skip the carpet shot and just show you the fit when it’s better lit, because she’s lovely in it.
Lily Rabe wore white so the dark carpet isn’t that much of a problem for this look – ethereal and so pretty and I love the cape layer on top.
Selma Blair’s outfit meanwhile is helped by her hair and that sharp white collar with the side button. It’s too bad the trousers are lost on this bullsh-t carpet because the tailoring is outstanding.
And finally, the person who actually did the best job of working with the lighting limitations of this setup: Blake Lively, who was like, nope, I will not let this black carpet swallow up my look and went with a floral pyjama suit. I don’t really love the colour combination here but I do give her points for choosing an outfit that defied the environment.
