Penelope and Tilda as Cannes winds down
Cannes may be winding down but the fashion is not. Case in point, Tilda Swinton showed up for the premiere of the Spanish film La Bola Negra (The Black Ball) in an ombre Chanel suit with icy platinum hair.
This look would do David Bowie proud.
La Bola Negra is competing for the Palme d’Or, which will be announced this weekend. It is directed by the duo of Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, who also co-wrote the script along with Alberto Conejero. The film follows three gay men in 1932, 1937, and 2017, respectively. It got a twenty-minute standing ovation at its premiere. The minute count for standing Os is overblown at film festivals, but it also felt like a lot of films got a muted if polite reception this year, so I wonder if the rapturous reception for La Bola Negra means it might be a top contender for the Palme. At the very least, this is now a film on the awards radar.
The film stars Carlos González, Miguel Bernardeau, and singer-songwriter Guitarricadelafuente, as well as Penelope Cruz. She also wore Chanel to the premiere, though she opted for black feathers. It feels anticlimactic after Tilda’s suit.
But this is just the beginning of Penelope’s summer, as she also has Olivia Wilde’s The Invite coming out next month. And if the momentum for La Bola Negra holds up, she could be supporting this film all year and into next, should it make an Oscar push. Generally, I don’t think Cannes is the place to hold back, but it might be a long year for Penelope. Plenty more chances to wear something more interesting than a feather duster.
