Cannes gets going
The Cannes Film Festival kicked into high gear with the first gala premieres of the festival, and while the Hollywood studios are sitting it out this year, the stars are not. Demi Moore, Chloe Zhao, and Ruth Negga are all on the jury this year, and they are showing up and showing out on the Croisette. Check out Chloe Zhao in this hooded Gabriela Hearst gown:
Not to be outdone, Ruth Negga opted for a menswear look, from AMI Paris by Alexandre Mattiussi.
And then Demi Moore showed up in a structural Gucci gown inspired by, I assume, wrapping paper.

Another woman in red is Isabelle Huppert, who stars in Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s French-language film, Parallel Tales. It’s inspired by Krzyszof Kieslowski’s ten-hour television series Dekalog, but Farhadi is only adapting one segment (the series is based on the Ten Commandments). Farhadi’s film is about a woman, played by Huppert, who spies on her neighbors. Huppert wore a stunning red Gucci gown with matching opera gloves and a diamond cuff. This is so striking:

Of course, it wouldn’t be Cannes if people weren’t already starting up the Oscar race for the next year, and Sandra Hüller is out early with Paweł Pawlikowski’s Fatherland. She wore a feather pelt to the premiere:

Finally, Seth Rogen and Julia Louis-Dreyfus turned up for the animated film, Tangles. They both voice characters in the film, and Seth is also a producer. They were joined at the photocall by Samira Wiley and Abbi Jacobson. Lots of red at Cannes so far.

Later, Seth and his wife, Lauren Miller Rogen, turned up for the Fatherland premiere. I like the idea of Lauren’s dress, I just wish it either had a cleaner neckline or a different pattern. But that pattern and neckline combination is too much. Cute couple, though.

And JLD wore beaded Jenny Packham to that same premiere. This looks like something Kate Middleton would wear (neutral).

Cannes always brings out high fashion, especially for the jurors who attend every gala premiere and a bunch of parties over the course of two weeks. You know how they always have those behind-the-scenes videos of people getting ready for big red carpet events like the Oscars and the Met Gala? I would love to see a whole feature-length documentary about a Cannes jury member prepping all their looks for the festival. They have to have multiple black-tie looks for premieres and parties, as well as more casual looks for press conferences and cocktail dos, I would love to see how a star and stylist plan the style strategy for an event as long as Cannes.
