Renate and Ruth wrap up Cannes
The Cannes Film Festival wrapped up this weekend by extending Neon’s streak of Palme d’Or winners. Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord, starring Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan, was the jury’s best picture selection, which makes it an early Oscar contender, along with La Bola Negra which Sarah wrote about last week. It’ll be interesting to see if Fjord’s Oscar potential extends to its two leads, both of whom already have one each. For Sebastian, who was born in Romania, I wonder if this experience is that much more special, working with a Romanian director, as he has talked about reconnecting with his culture on this film.
As for Renate, she’s of course coming off the success of Sentimental Value, and her Oscar nomination for her performance in that project alongside Stellan Skarsgård who, by the way, was also in Cannes this year as a member of the jury and I just want to make sure you don’t miss this – Renate wearing Stellan, in my opinion one of the best style moments of the year.
That wasn’t her only style smash hit, though. The final banger for the closing ceremony is a f-cking menace. Basically a sleeveless duster, open through the middle, over a pair of siiiiiick AF sequined trousers and a pair of silver rockstar boots, I AM DEAD.
This is the work of stylist Karla Welch who was BUSY during Cannes because she also works with Ruth Negga and I’ve been waiting until the end of the festival to do a roundup of Ruth’s jury looks – no misses, not a single one. Remember my post last week about how much peplum there’s been this year with all kinds of peplum recommendations? Ruth was in multiple peplums on the Croisette. This one is custom Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello.

For the final Cannes carpet, she was in a white peplum Dior by Jonathan Anderson, it’s exquisite.
I loooooove the vintage Ossie Clarke she wore to one of the parties – it’s a slip dress with sequin bust, under a cape with sequin shoulders and a beautiful pair of white platforms.

The orange beaded necklace here is a nice touch, because of how it clashes unexpectedly both in colour and texture.
But my #1 favourite from Ruth and Karla’s Cannes wardrobe collaboration is when she wore what’s basically my favourite brand in the whole world, Sacai. This flouncy white skirt, with the ribbed top and ribbon sleeves, and an AALIYAH lyric across the body…
You cannot beat an AALIYAH lyric, period.
