This year my whelms were very undered by the Met Gala, but at least when Sabrina Carpenter stepped onto the carpet I gasped out loud with delight, as I often do when Miss Carpenter takes the stage.

She’s cheeky, she’s funny, I love the bops, I love the way she drives all the worst people crazy, Sabrina Carpenter has become my jam, and at the Met Gala, she is also my best dressed.

Her dress is by Jonathan Anderson for Dior, made of tulle and celluloid strips depicting the 1954 film Sabrina starring Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. (Get past the absolutely WILD age gap and it’s a charming film. The 1995 remake starring Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond is pretty solid, too, though it still has a major age gap.)

Of course, I like this look because of the association with cinema. Sabrina was inspired by what she claims is one of her favorite films, honoring a whole other art form via fashion, which is meant to charm me, specifically. But at first glance, I thought she was riffing on flappers, with the jeweled headpiece and the dropped-waist detail on the dress. And THAT is why I like this look so much, because it has a specific purpose in marrying film and fashion, but the design is also just plain good, grounded in historical style that suits Sabrina’s sassy persona.

Flappers were the riot girls of their day, and Sabrina’s entire presentation is rooted in turning traditional presentations of femininity meant for the male gaze into celebrations of women and womanhood. Flappers, in their time, were doing something similar, their waist-less dresses hiding their bodies while simultaneously revealing limbs and scandalous ankles. It seems inevitable that Sabrina Carpenter will eventually have a major flapper moment. This look is a nice change from her usual 1950s-inspired style, and one of the most fun and interesting outfits of an otherwise disappointing Met Gala.

PS. Sabrina also performed during the gala, including a song – THE song – with Stevie Nicks.
