I’ve never felt sorry for Teyana Taylor before. I mean, frankly, why would I? She doesn’t need that from me or anybody else.

But I noticed last night that as she landed on the carpet, in a Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann ensemble, that things were not going as they usually do. Not Teyana, who was giving her all to every single pose she had but – the vibe around her was different.

Because when someone arrives on the carpet at 6:51pm, there’s a reverence and a quiet to the phalanx of black-clad ‘invisible’ staff on the stairs, who are there to help with trains or balance if necessary. But later in the night, there’s an energy shift. An agitation… almost as if all the staff, who are suddenly striding around very fast, are expecting someone else and need to get that someone inside for the dinner to start.

Or possibly two someones.

Teyana was on the host committee and – I don’t know when they were told to show up, or whether her window should have had more grace in it just to make sure this look got the glory it deserved.

But in the end it didn’t, either because Beyoncé’s imminent arrival took some of the oxygen or because there was another metallic contender…

Look at it, take in this big vast metallic… egg. What mysteries are contained in its folds? We can’t know. Is Rihanna using this egg visual to tell us she’s once again giving life to the world/her own children? Not for us to understand. Is it more of a Gaia/Mother Earth metaphor? Also yes, and also no. You don’t need to understand, just enjoy it!

Because you do enjoy it. You know you do. How can you not appreciate this level of got-here-half-an-hour-late, everyone’s here waiting, and she and A$AP Rocky will put on a benign little show, but one that’s totally worth it?

They look great – his Chanel to her Maison Margiela, but both of them fully ready to do what they’re here for, and wear the f*ck out of these gorgeous costumes created for them.

And next year she’ll be late again, and Anna Wintour will start dinner without her, yet again, and we will all be right here for it. Because she delivers! Every single detail is worth our time.

So. A tale of two metallics. Or so I thought originally. But I missed one hiding in plain sight:

Here’s Simone Ashley, just casually draped in chains or, per the press department at Stella McCartney, “the dress is constructed from 70% repurposed Falabella chains and threads sourced from the Stella McCartney London atelier.”

There are of course many other references to this dress that say Ashley wore ‘nothing but chains’, and while I probably could zoom enough to verify that, I think the effect is the same. Which means my same gauge comes back out – a nude dress is *great* if she’s having fun, but I wasn’t originally sure. Then I found this picture:

Definitely a fun face. Which means as far as I’m concerned, metallic dresses won the night, hands down.
