Prior to the release of Wicked, Emilia Pérez was holding on to some good momentum up to its release on Netflix. And, as we saw, the stars of the film, Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz were everywhere promoting it. And then came Wicked, also a musical, and it got louder and louder and louder in the days before it opened. Opening weekend was big, Thanksgiving weekend was also big, which is why over the last couple of weeks, it seems as though Emilia Pérez has lost some ground.

Karla is still in position for a Best Actress nomination but Cynthia Erivo is carrying way more hype. Zoe Saldana is still considered a frontunner for a Best Supporting Actor nomination but Ariana Grande is surging. With the critics boards and associations announcing their picks one by one over the next week and a half and the Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations coming next week too, and the Oscar nomination period looming in early January, the Emilia Pérez team is giving it a last push before the holidays.

Zoe, Selena, and Karla were in New York yesterday for a screening and more press stops. Zoe was on Live! with Kelly and Mark this morning and Selena was on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night. Just in time for Giving Tuesday and she took the opportunity to talk about the Rare Impact Fund and the work she’s been doing between Rare Beauty and her foundation.

I saw a few headlines out there about an “awkward” moment that happened during the interview when Benny Blanco came up. Turns out it was people on the internet being stupid because the moment wasn’t awkward at all, it was funny and cute. Selena is very comfortable talking about Benny, as we’ve seen over the last year or so, and she was playful and willing to share with Stephen what they did for Thanksgiving dinner etc etc.

She is also really committed to the black and white style vibe she’s largely maintained throughout this press tour. If Emilia Pérez does go deeper into award season (for sure the Globes and Critics Choice, and I can see them at the SAGs too), I wonder whether or not this will continue or if she and her stylist, Erin Walsh, will work in more colour. Personally I like the black and white thing. Every look has been different, from the structure to the materials, there’s been sequins and leather and sharp collars and cleavage too. Andrew Mukamal did a great job with Carey Mulligan last year on the awards circuit with mostly black dresses that were unique every time. And Selena and Erin are fully capable of that too.
