The Tower of Zendaya
I don’t know how much more we’ll be able to handle from Zendaya and Law Roach on The Odyssey press tour. It’s only been two stops – London and Paris – and our necks are completely flattened, it feels impossible to recover, and there is barely any time between serves.
Like, one day after that crazy f-cking slay with the Schiaparelli straight off the runway for the London premiere, Zendaya shows up at the Eiffel Tower looking like this:
I am not OK! But please don’t ever stop!
As usual where Zendaya and Law Roach are concerned, there’s so much intention happening here. The symmetry with the Eiffel Tower with that headpiece, obviously. But also the warrior vibes with the headpiece to honour her character, Athena. And to go further into that idea, since the tower looks like it’s coming out of her head, that’s how Athena emerged from Zeus’s head, right? Fully formed after a nine-month headache because that asshole ate her mother who then spent the next nine months building her immortal child, the goddess of war and also wisdom, and in the process brain-traumatising the f-ckboy god who was threatened by the power of her fertility. (In one of the Athena origin stories, Zeus learns of a prophecy that Athena’s mother would give birth to a son who would usurp his throne, which is why he swallowed her. Again, the Greeks were wild.)
But there’s also a Greek x Fashion Archive connection here too. As Law shares, this is Givenchy by Lee McQueen from 1997 (headpiece by Phillip Treacy), original worn on the runway by Debra Shaw, and the collection was called The Search for the Golden Fleece which, of course, is inspired by the legend of Jason and the Argonauts. Athena was one of Jason’s patrons. She’s probably more closely associated with Odysseus but she always favours heroes, and in particular heroes who are wily and crafty. So to go back to Zendaya and Law Roach, the fashion history blending with the Greek mythology here is next level.
In other Zendaya news, she was just nominated today for an Emmy in the Lead Actress category for her performance in Euphoria, one of only seven nominations for the show in its final season. And I say “only” because season two was nominated 16 times. Euphoria was not a factor in the best series category and the only other actor nominated from the show is Colman Domingo. So a show that was embraced by the Television Academy has clearly now fallen out of favour, understandably. We can agree, I think, that it became a total mess. But we can also agree that Zendaya didn’t have to wear it and with her nomination, it’s another example that she’s quite popular both with the audience and also in the industry.
