Tomdaya: almost there

Tonight is the Hollywood red carpet premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the final red carpet stop on what’s been a worldwide press tour. And for Tom Holland and Zendaya, it’s between two press tours, happening concurrently, since they’re also in The Odyssey, currently the #1 movie at the cineplex and soon to be the #2 movie at cineplex when Brand New Day opens this week. As I wrote a few days ago, they are on track to be the first married couple to actually be IN the two biggest movies at the box office, a new category of Power Couple.

There’s no doubt Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be big. How big is the question. On the conservative end of the projections, they’re saying between $150-180 domestic. On the aggressive side, it’s over $200 million domestic. Several factors are in play here. First, the anticipation. It’s been four and a half years since the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home which ended up grossing $2 billion… DURING THE PANDEMIC! And filmed during the pandemic! When you add in The Odyssey boost, and of course the Tomdaya of it all, the interest and awareness is definitely there.

As for Tomdaya, they’ve been at this for weeks and weeks and weeks. Very outside, so much outside, when we know they generally prefer being way inside and deep undercover. So undercover that they managed to get married with nobody knowing until Law Roach just casually revealed that the wedding already happened and that’s it. Still, we have no idea when and where, even though trust me people have tried. There’s a good chance, then, that by next week Tom and Zendaya will disappear, secure in the knowledge that they did the most when they could.

Social media is popping with all kinds of new interview footage from their various junket appearances. This one with Vogue China is doing well – there’s a moment when he tucks in closer to her, leans his face toward hers, and the fan edits are isolating that shot like he’s hoping for a kiss. And another where she fixes a stray hair on his forehead… little moments of intimacy that, of course, the internet lives for.

And probably the most viral, at least today, is this one. The instant that Tom and Jacob realise they f-cked up, LOOOLLLLL.

It’s been a gift, this entire double tour, a gift from Tomdaya that we probably don’t deserve but that we better be grateful for because it won’t be like this again for a long, long time, if ever. Because it could only happen when the work schedules are exactly the same. It doesn’t look like this when it’s just her movie or his movie. This comet is about to orbit back out of our range.
