Sydney after Cassie
Sydney Sweeney and Scooter Braun, two famous people on the list of couples who deserve each other, stepped out in New York on Saturday, ahead of the series finale of Euphoria. They look like they were just coming from a wedding.
As for Euphoria and how Cassie ended up… spoiler alert…look away now…
Trapped in a dollhouse, basically, condemned to a life without autonomy or agency, a living tragedy. Cassie’s storyline was probably the most criticised in the series, especially this season. And Sydney seems to have an answer for that, as she posted a farewell to the character and the show the other day with a three-word caption:
My eyes, they’ve rolled right out of my head. Nobody was talking about her acting, FFS. The issue was with how her character was portrayed, how the women in this show are constantly portrayed – and sure, there’s a case to be made that Sam Levinson was making a point about female oppression and misogyny, objectification and sexualization… but that’s also the conversation, because he didn’t land that point, not even close, if he was even trying to make it all because no one is convinced he actually had one.
And further to this, there’s also the discourse about who was working on Euphoria, and in the industry in general over all, especially during the compromising scenes that the show is known for. Just today The Hollywood Reporter published a story about below-the-line jobs and how few women occupy those positions.
None of those discussions are directed at Sydney personally, only the fact that her character and her experience as an actor in these situations highlight the lack of diversity on sets – which, as someone who has her own production company, and has had enough success to be a job creator herself, is an issue she SHOULD be concerned with, over and above “it’s called acting”.
But this is just the latest example of why Sydney Sweeney is as polarising as she is. Because she never seems to engage in the nuances of a woman’s experience in the entertainment industry, it’s always just broad strokes, the most basic 101 level explanation that adds nothing to a complicated conversation.
What else happened today…

The NBA Finals begin on Wednesday featuring the New York Knicks vs the San Antonio Spurs. Knicks fans were already chanting “Bring on Wemby” before they wrapped up the Eastern Conference Finals. Even then it seemed… ill-advised. Anything can happen in the finals but, like, we’re dealing with a generational player here. Which is why I’ve been paying even closer attention to these playoffs. Like, to be honest, for me it was OKC and SGA, but it’s also, as someone who is deeply invested in pop culture, Victor Wembanyama, if he stays healthy, could be dominating this sport for the next decade. As Danny Chau writes, Wemby’s “time is now”. (The Ringer)
Our site manager, Emily, is off today because she spent the weekend at Echoes Through the Canyon or, as she put it to me over text, “lez fest”. Emily is obsessed with Brandi Carlile, and she was sending me videos all day yesterday of the performances; as it always is when Emily goes to her lez fests, the vibe is serene and safe. And the music rocks. (Seattle Times)
