Chlöe Bailey: Resurrection and Bubble Skirts
As MC mentioned in his Music Lounge column this week, Chlöe Bailey dropped a mixtape this week, Resurrection, with Timbaland, and the vibes are so Aaliyah which, naturally, means it’s really good. I’ll leave the music analysis to him next week but for now, just know that Resurrection is a solid summer listen, both current and nostalgic in the right way – at least in my opinion.
Let me focus instead on Chlöe in NYC this week promoting the record because it’s made me realised I’ve been sleeping on her style. Chlöe works with Jason Rembert, and here’s a fit that needs more shine from a few weeks ago – this blazer over that sculptured skirt is FIRE!
And her looks this week in New York have been all bangers. Here she is, jumping on the Supergirl buzz in a multicoloured preppy dream – I need this skirt in my life and the corset over the dress shirt with the tie is excellent.
The other outfit that caught my eye is the blue shirt over the blue miniskirt, which is almost like a bubble skirt, or a balloon skirt, or even bloomers.

It’s actually the second bubble-ish she’s worn in the last few weeks – you can see the other one here and this is a trend that’s been dancing its way back into our lives over the last couple of years. Just this spring, Zendaya showed up at Louis Vuitton in both a bubble and a mullet which was the subject of one of my previous shops this month.

I LOVE a bubble skirt, it’s basically a tutu in a sturdier fabric. Right now there are bubbles/balloons/bloomers all over my rack at ETALK. And I’ve bought a few for my personal closet. The key, at least for me, when I wear a bubble is to size up, that way it’s short enough for enough leg but not too short where it’s too much ass.
Chlöe’s miniskirt is the Vaquera Bustle, available in black, much harder to find in her shade of blue, and sizes are going fast. It’s also expensive and you don’t have to go to that high of a price point for a good bubble.
The Retrofete Isolde Open-Back Bubble Mini Dress is very cute and it would be part of my wedding weekend wardrobe if I were getting married, maybe the rehearsal dinner. But also, it’s versatile. I wore it under a slouchy cropped blazer and high-top Converse and I didn’t want to take it off at the end of the shoot.
Simone’s pulled a few pieces from The Frankie Shop for me lately, including a long bomber I wore on today’s episode of ETALK. Here’s another piece I haven’t worn yet but I can’t wait – The Frankie Shop Alina Plaid Wool-Blend Bubble-Hem Shorts gives Vivienne Westwood and private school but also sports. The colour and the pattern make this all season, in the fall or winter with a pair of wool tights.
If you liked that one, but are looking for a better deal, the ASTR The Label Libby Bubble-Hem Mini Skirt is quite similar, and it’s under $40!
I almost hugged Simone – and we are not huggers – when she pulled the Sea Loraine Satin Bubble Shorts out of the box, they are adorable. Bubble skirt energy and a ballet, but also cargo, right? Again, sizing up worked for me with the length. Plus they’re on sale.
I took my regular size in the Spade Skirt from A Bronze Age. Comes in four colourways, but in my opinion the Montauk stripe is superior. No belt when I wore it, just a hooded slouchy short sleeve tee and it also works with denim.
If you like the stripes, there’s also the JW Anderson gathered pinstripe balloon miniskirt in a paler pattern. This skirt is marked way down right now and that’s a great price for this brand. I took my regular size on this one too.
Zara’s Puff Mini is on sale now too and what I like about it is the button waist, like a pair of shorts. I wore it exactly as it’s shown on the website – with that jacket – to play golf.
H&M’s Bubble Hem Mini comes in two colourways, black and cream, and this is also quite affordable to kick around in all summer.
Speaking of kicking around, the Adidas-like athletic stripes balloon miniskirt is so much fun – comes in two colourways, I wore it in red with a floral shirt to FIFA FanFest for my interview with Wyclef Jean and it was breezy and light. Note, this skirt fits on the larger side. Also it’s under $60.
Today is the last Prime Day and there are bubble skirts all over Amazon but not all are created equal in my experience. The ones on Amazon with the elastic waistband, in my opinion, keep bunching at the waist, so I recommend this one with the band across the front so that the waistband isn’t always rolling.
There’s also this polka dot option at Amazon and it’s not the highest quality but it will get the job done over the next couple of months.
And finally…
My favourite skirt in this category, sort of bubble-bustle, sort of ruffle, and all the way excellent – I’m taking it to a junket next week with a Sacai blazer and I can’t wait, it’s the Crissy Denim Mini Skirt at AllSaints, look at her! This is a year-round skirt, I can’t wait to wear her under a slouchy black turtleneck sweater in the fall/winter.
Enjoy the bubbles, bustles, balloons, and blooms! Please note, the above are affiliate links.
What else happened today…
Millie Bobby Brown’s blue satin dress last night is all prom to me but I don’t hate it. I do, however, like the Fug Girls, hate the party option. It’s horrid. (Go Fug Yourself)
Kayleigh Donaldson’s title made me laugh – Canada is part of Europe, sort of, by way of Celine Dion? (Pajiba)
Sunday Rose Kidman Urban looks great on the cover of ELLE Australia and her mother’s advice seems basic but… like… you’d be surprised at how unpunctual celebrities can be. Or maybe you’re not surprised because I talk about it all the time. (Celebitchy)
Dua Lipa’s library for banned books. (The Cut)
Brian Phillip’s piece on the Reflecting Pool saga in Washington DC is hilarious and sad. (The Ringer)
