Dear Gossips,

It was the screaming that gave it away that Beyoncé had arrived at the Met Gala last night – and she made us wait. Not way past the wrap, unlike Rihanna LOL (as usual), but late enough to be near the end… which is not usually how it works with co-chairs. But as I noted at The Squawk ahead of our live-chat, it was unimaginable that Beyoncé would get there so early, just to stand around and greet people the way co-chairs are typically expected to.

Back to the screaming though… it wasn’t just the fans, it was also the press gathered on the steps, already jacked up on the anticipation. That, naturally, is the effect of Beyoncé, especially when she’s been so quiet, and especially since we’ve all been wondering whether or not the Met Gala was a kickoff to something more. At the time of this writing, it is not yet known whether or not B would be making some kind of announcement about act iii. But, like, that’s not even the most stunning part of her appearance at the event.

And neither was the fashion. It’s Olivier Rousteing, a skeleton to meet the Costume Institute exhibit focusing on art and the body. And if you really want to you could make the case that this has a rock vibe to it, considering that there’s all kinds of skeletal imagery in rock etc etc.

The dress is elaborate, it is definitely regal, and it’s also coded to Beyoncé's unparalleled status in pop culture – bones made to look like precious stones, a crown for the Queen – but, again, the fashion isn’t the conversation. The conversation is Beyoncé herself, her attitude and her behaviour. Like… did… Beyoncé actually give an interview?!

THAT is the gossip, gossips! Beyoncé stopped on a red carpet to answer questions, what? Sure, it helped that La La Anthony is one of her good friends (ahem, as I mentioned yesterday) but La La wasn’t the only person she acknowledged with a microphone in her hand.

Sorry… like… who is this? Since when does Beyoncé talk to reporters on the press line? What is happening? MC texted me last night that he was “still in complete shock that she gave an interview”. Same. Those of us who’ve been studying Beyoncé don’t know what to do with this information. Never mind the music, this already a new era.

But if you want to go there, make what you will of this:

She may not have agreed to attend the Met Gala and co-chair just for act iii though. Beyoncé couldn’t wait to talk about Blue Ivy during her interview (honestly I can’t believe I just typed that) and sharing this experience with Blue was clearly a major motivation for her. It could, really, be as simple as that. Blue being one of the few underage guests allowed to attend – because who’s going to say no? Not Anna Wintour.

Blue is 14 now, a proper teen. Who kept her sunglasses on even when her dad gently suggested she remove them… not just once…

…but twice! At least!

That custom Balenciaga bomber though, for me that’s the standout piece out of all the Carters. And maybe this was also part of Beyoncé’s design. She said it herself, her greatest creation is her children. So the “Fashion is Art” that she brought to the Met Gala was in the form of her daughter…who also spoke, sort of, to reporters, answering their questions from the steps just like her mother, WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE IS THIS AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE?

Beyoncé changed inside the event and made remarks alongside Venus Williams and Nicole Kidman. This is Robert Wun – and what a huuuuuge win for Robert Wun tonight, a designer I’ve been saying needs to be seen more in Hollywood, and who dressed so many of the most notable celebrities at the Met Gala, including the Queen herself.

She and Jay-Z hosted a party following the Met Gala, probably more locked down in terms of no cameras than it was earlier.

No but seriously, I’m still back at Beyoncé giving interviews – am I hallucinating or did that really happen?

More Met Gala coverage coming …

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
